How Much Does It Cost To Elope in 2024

Elopements + Intimate Weddings, Resources

This is usually the first question that people ask me: How much does it cost to elope? And I get it! There are many wedding planning and wedding budget-related resources out there, but not a ton about elopements.

As an elopement photographer and someone who eloped as well, I’d love to dive into elopement costs, and why eloping in 2024 isn’t necessarily about saving money but spending money on what is MOST important to you.

Elopement vs. Wedding Cost

In 2024, the average wedding might make your wallet cry a little, but eloping? That’s a whole different story. According to Zola, the average wedding expenses for couples getting married in 2024 total around $33,000. In my experience, as an elopement photographer, the average elopement costs somewhere between $5,000 to $15,000.

Having an elopement used to be a cheaper and quicker alternative when getting married, but nowadays, that isn’t the same story (but for good reason!). Instead, elopements have become a deeply meaningful, intimate experience that’s specifically crafted for you and your partner. It is no longer about popping over to the courthouse and signing a paper, it can be a full day adventure filled with all of the things that reflect you and your personalities! So, while it generally still is cheaper than the average wedding, it can be as expensive as you make be.

When it comes to elopement costs, I’d like you to think less about pleasing your aunt Susan with fancy centerpieces and more about spending that hard-earned money on what truly matters to you – love and adventure.

So, How Much Does It Cost to Elope?

Here, you’ll find a list of things you might consider spending money on for your elopement day. Of course, some of these costs are completely optional, and the total costs will vary depending on where you’re eloping, the budget you’ve allocated for your elopement, the season you’re getting married, and many other variables.

Marriage License

This one is a non-negotiable, and the marriage licence cost will depend on where you’re getting married. For example, in British Columbia, where I’m located, a license would cost $100.

Elopement Permit

Depending on your chosen location, you may need to get a permit in order to be able to elope there.

As a part of my elopement packages, this is something I help you with!

Rings

This is a rather common cost eloping couples opt in for. Again, you don’t HAVE to get rings or if you do – it’s up to you what material they’re made of. Different materials = a different cost!

Travel

Are you eloping close to home or planning a destination elopement? If you’re choosing to travel for your elopement, then you have to consider any flights and other transportation costs.

Accommodations

Where are you staying? Are you coming home after your elopement day, camping on site or booking a luxurious cabin for the night?

Guests

Just because you’re eloping doesn’t mean you can’t have any guests! You can choose to invite your closest loved ones to join you for the ceremony, or maybe celebrate with you when you’re done adventuring just the two of you!

So if you choose to have a few guests, you need to consider additional costs for their food and drink, any accommodations and potentially travel fees if that is something you will be covering!

Your Wedding Attire

You can hunt for discounts ahead of time, or go thrift shopping for your elopement outfits if you want to save money, but you could also splurge on a dress that you’ve always wanted, if that’s your vibe!

Flowers

I always encourage eloping couples to get some form of florals! They add a little extra touch to your elopement day and your elopement gallery. You could opt for a bouquet or maybe even a flower crown, and a boutonniere! Working with a florist is a fun way to bring your floral dreams to life that will match the vibe of your wedding day. You can also get your own florals, and make up a bouquet yourself if you’re feeling creative, or you can choose not to have flowers at all. It’s all up to you!

Activities

Most couples these days want to fill their elopement day with fun and meaningful activities. These activities can be things like hiking, a picnic, or stopping at your favourite coffee shop for oat lattes. The activities you choose can also be more adventurous like a helicopter ride, going kayaking, renting out a boat, and so many others! So the costs can be as low as ZERO, or several hundred dollars.

Your Elopement Photographer

Okay, I may be biased with this one, but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting an elopement photographer to capture your day! You will definitely want to be able to look back and reminisce about your elopement and all the beautiful moments you shared together!

And a lot of elopement photographers (myself included) also help you plan your dream elopement day, from helping you find the perfect locations to getting all the permits, crafting a timeline, and overall making sure it’s as stress-free for you as possible!

SO, here’s the deal – an elopement costs exactly what you want it to cost. Usually the biggest expenses go to photography, travel, and your wedding attire. It’s all about what you can afford and what feels right for you.

Your Elopement Experience

What matters most to you on your elopement day? Is it the breathtaking backdrop, the once-in-a-lifetime adventure, or the intimate moments with your partner? This day is about celebrating your love YOUR way. So, if you want to splurge on a private helicopter tour or a five-star dinner under the stars, go for it! Try not to focus on how much does it costs to elope, because at the end of the day, the price tag on an experience like that? Absolutely priceless.
