In this guide, we will go through the ins and outs of how to elope in BC so you don’t have to go figuring it out on your own!

When to Elope in BC

BC is a place that experiences all four seasons, and each season brings its own uniqueness and backdrop for your elopement. Choosing the right time for your BC elopement really depends on what you are looking for with weather, temperature, location, and overall vibe. There is no wrong season to elope in BC, just keep in mind that certain locations may not be accessible during the winter months.

  • Winter (December – March): Most parts of BC become a winter wonderland, with everything blanketed in snow (unless you are on the coast!).The beauty of snow-covered landscapes offers a magical setting for a cozy, intimate elopement. If you’re a big fan of the winter and cooler temperatures, this is a great time for quieter and secluded locations. You could opt for a cozy, cabin elopement in the mountains of your favourite ski town.
  • Spring (April – June): Spring in BC brings mild temperatures, and the awakening of nature. Spring is a great time for a BC elopement, there are less crowds since it is still shoulder season but there will still be snow in the mountains. Spring might be a great time of year for a coastal or oceanside elopement.
  • Summer (July – September): Warm temperatures and long days make summer perfect for outdoor elopements. Summers in BC are a popular time for weddings and elopements, so keep in mind certain locations will be busier. You may opt for a sunrise elopement to avoid crowds if you’re looking for a more intimate and secluded experience.
  • Fall (September – November): Fall in BC is like no other! Truly my favourite season. The changing leaves, crisp mornings and the end of tourist season are a few reasons a fall elopement might be for you.

In BC you are required to have a marriage officiant or commissioner perform your wedding ceremony. If you are looking to have a religious ceremony, a religious leader can also perform the ceremony but anyone performing wedding ceremonies must be registered with Vital Statistics Agency. Unlike some U.S. states, in BC or Canada, you cannot have a friend or family member perform your ceremony, but there are other ways you can include friends and family in your ceremony if you choose! You can find a marriage commissioner here for where you are eloping in BC. Marriage commissioners cost around $78CAD.

When you elope or get married in BC, you will need to have two witnesses present during your ceremony to make it legal. Your photographer (hi, it’s me!) can be one of your witnesses, but your officiant cannot! You need to make sure you have another witness with you or make arrangements to get officially hitched prior to your elopement day.

Choose your BC Elopement Vendors

Just because you are eloping doesn’t mean you don’t need all the bells and whistles! Get that stunning bouquet you’ve always dreamed of and hit up the local cheese shop for a customized charcuterie board. Whether its a florist, hair & make up, or catering, remember to reach out to your vendors early as many book out early!

When it comes to planning your wedding attire, think about the weather and location when picking your elopement outfits. Layers and suitable footwear can keep you comfortable in any weather. Think about the vibe you want your elopement to be and then find attire that matches the vibe! At the end of the day, this is all about YOU, so pick something that feels like you!

Being Kind to the Environment

Show respect for BC’s incredible landscapes by following the “Leave No Trace” principles. Dispose of waste properly, choose eco-friendly decorations, and pick vendors with sustainable practices.
