If you are looking to elope in the Canadian Rockies, you’ve come to the right place! The Canadian Rockies, with their majestic peaks and breathtaking landscapes, provide an unparalleled backdrop for couples seeking an intimate and romantic elopement. In this post, we’ll explore the best time to elope, I will share essential tips on the elopement process, and delve into the reasons why the Canadian Rockies are a dream destination for the wildly in love!
When to Elope in the Canadian Rockies
Spring (April – June):
As the Rockies awaken from winter slumber, blooming wildflowers and mild temperatures create a romantic vibe. Spring is a great time to elope to avoid the bigger crowds and milder temperatures but depending on where you’d like to elope, certain locations may not be as accessible due to snowy conditions in the mountains! Spring you might want to opt for a lakeside or forest elopement.
Summer (June – August):
With summer you get the vibrant greens, the wildflowers in the alpine and longer daylight hours. Summer is a great time of year to elope in the Canadian Rockies, you will have longer days providing more options for epic locations and hiking adventures (if that’s what you’re into!). Summer also means warmer temperatures and bigger crowds especially in places like Banff and Yoho National Park. There are SO many hidden gems in the Canadian Rockies that if you are willing to go the extra mile, you can still find beautiful, secluded locations.
Fall (September – November):
The Rocky Mountains transform into a canvas of warm hues, offering a cozy and intimate elopement experience. Fall is my favourite season for so many reasons – the stunning golden larches, the cooler mornings/evenings and perfect for couples who appreciate a quieter atmosphere. The crowds start to fall away and the experience gets a little bit more intimate.
Winter (December – March):
If you want to embrace the magic of a wintery landscape and snow-covered mountain peaks, winter is your time! Bonus, you’ll also get less crowds! Ideal for couples looking for a unique and cozy celebration but expect cold temperatures when eloping outdoors (you will definitely need a jacket!!) and limited options for hiking and high alpine locations.
How to Elope in the Canadian Rockies
Choose the Perfect Elopement Location
There are an endless amount of locations to have your elopement in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Where you would like to elope is entirely up to you, so here are a few things to consider:
Season and Weather
The Canadian Rockies experiences all four seasons so your elopement location may be season and weather dependent. For example, if you want to have a hiking adventure for your elopement, it is best to elope in the warmer months. Snow is in the alpine from October to June so certain locations may not be accessible in the winter.
Landscape Preferences
What do you want your elopement location to look like. Lakeside? Mountains? Untamed wilderness? The Canadian Rockies has it all – the hardest part is narrowing it down (but don’t worry I’m here to help!).
Accessibility
Do you want to have easier access to your elopement location, or are you ready to put on your adventure shoes and have a more secluded, rugged elopement experience. Also, if you are considering bringing guests on your elopement day, accessibility is definitely something to think about!
Personal Connection
You may want to choose a location that resonates with you and your love story. Maybe there is a meaningful place that you’ve spent time together or maybe a place you’ve always dreamed of going together.
Permits + Regulations
Depending on where you choose to elope in the Canadian Rockies, you may be required to obtain a permit. It is important to look into permits and regulations before choosing your elopement location. As your elopement photographer, I can help you with this!
Craft Your Elopement Experience
Personalize Your Vows
Share heartfelt promises that reflect your unique love story. This is part of what makes an elopement such an intimate experience – share your vows with each other and take in every word!
Incorporate Rituals
This can be anything from planting a tree together to a handfasting ceremony to reading letters written by your friends and family on the morning of your special day.
Include Activities
Your elopement doesn’t have to be short and straight to the point, why not make it a full day experience? The world is your oyster when it comes to eloping. Want to wake up with your partner in an A-frame cabin spending the morning having coffee and getting ready together? Or hiking to your ceremony location at sunrise to catch golden hour and having only the mountains as witnesses? The options are endless in the Canadian Rockies for activities!
Include Friends + Family
Decide whether you would like to have a small guest list of friends and family be present with you for your elopement or find other ways to include them in your day! You could have friends and family write letters to you, or FaceTime with them after you tie the knot.
Prepare for the Elements
Dress for the Weather
Layer up for varying temperatures and consider what you are going to wear for your wedding attire! In the winter and colder months, you will want to opt for a jacket and maybe even snow boots to get to your location!
Safety
Plan for outdoor elements and potential challenges associated with each season. Carrying bear spray during bear season is definitely a must!
