How to Prepare for Your Family Photoshoot

Families

Just picture this: a day where every laugh and giggle, every hug and sweet moment amongst the chaos is captured, preserving the essence of your family’s love and connection. That’s what it is all about. I’m Sam, your family photographer in Fernie & the Kootenays, and I specialize in capturing the beautifully messy, joyously unpredictable, and deeply authentic moments of your family life.

If you’ve been wanting to book a family photoshoot but are a bit worried about how to prepare for it, I’ve got you!

Understanding the Documentary-Style Family Photoshoot Approach

In a world where you often see curated social media feeds and “perfection,” I choose to celebrate the real, the raw, and the uniquely imperfect aspects of life. My documentary-style approach is all about capturing the story of your family just as you are—no stiff poses or forced smiles here. We’re after the laughter that follows a silly joke, the wind-tossed hair, and the sweet look of joy in your child’s eyes. These are the moments that tell your true story.

Preparing for Your Family Photoshoot

Getting ready for your photoshoot shouldn’t be stressful! If you choose to hire me as your family photographer, I will be there every step of the way to help you plan your session and make it as enjoyable as possible!

Be Yourselves

The best photos happen when you’re simply being yourselves! The photos will serve as a beautiful reminder of what makes your family unique. It’s these little moments that tell your true story in all its glory!

Location

Whether it’s a picnic in your backyard, a stroll through your favorite park, or baking cookies in your kitchen, choose a location or activity that feels like home to you.

Honestly, at-home family sessions are some of my favorites! Your home is such a special place. You spend SO much time here together, growing your family. That is something so special to document, to always remember those moments of your home together and all the memories that you create 10 to 20 years down the road.

Home is the place where your littles feel the most comfortable and at ease. It’s also warm and cozy, especially in the winter months when the weather can be cold and unpredictable.

At home you can make a quick snack for your kids (or yourselves) to make sure you are all feeling good during the session. You’ll also always have a change of clothes and everything you need on hand, in case anything unexpected happens.

What to Wear for Your Family Photos

Wear clothes that you’re comfortable in and that reflect your family’s personality. You definitely don’t need to match each other (although matching Christmas PJs can be a serious vibe!). Instead, wear colors and looks that complement each other. Earthy and neutral tones are always a great idea!

Make sure that what you wear is comfortable. I don’t recommend buying whole new outfits, that might feel stiff and maybe even wouldn’t be something you normally wear on the day to day. You want your photos to reflect you exactly as you all are!

If you’re planning your family photoshoot outdoors, be prepared for the weather and consider bringing a change of clothes, in case it’s raining or any accident happens.

But don’t worry, all of these details are covered in my session planning guide, and you have me for any questions, as your photographer as well!

Prepare Your Kids Ahead of Time

You know your kids best, of course, but what I’ve found is that kids feel more comfortable if they have been prepared ahead of time for something happening. Like telling them that your friend with a camera is coming over to play with you all and take pretty pictures while doing so!

During Your Family Photoshoot

This is where the magic happens. We’ll spend our time together engaging in activities you love, allowing me to capture those spontaneous, heartfelt moments. I’ll provide gentle direction and prompts, but the best moments are often the ones that unfold naturally. There’s absolutely no pressure to perform, just be present and enjoy the experience.
