Tips for Couples to Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera

As a BC elopement and lifestyle photographer, the number one thing I hear from couples before we dive into their session is, BUT WHAT IF WE’RE AWKWARD!? I get it – being in front of the camera ain’t easy my dudes! It can always feel a little awkward at first, but don’t worry, I got you! Here are some tips for couples to feel more comfortable in front of the camera!

3 Tips to Help Couples Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera

Here are 3 things I do as a lifestyle photographer to help you feel less awks when you step in front of my lens:

Tip #1: GET TO KNOW YOU! This is truly a priority for me. Establishing a connection and building trust can really help ease the nerves and awkwardness! I do this, first, by sending you a questionnaire so I can get to know you and your story a lil bit better, and then while we chat leading up to your shoot. By the time your session rolls around, it’s like we already know each other! So the first tip, is to fill out the questionnaire, giving me all the juicy details! You can make it into a fun activity with your partner, so grab that bottle of wine and enjoy the time together, answering questions about yourselves and your love story! It really helps, I promise!

Tip #2: ALWAYS KEEP MOVING! Movement is key! I always tell me my couples to pretend like I’m taking a video of you! During couples sessions, I always provide couples with gentle guidance and casual conversation throughout our whole session! We will move around a lot so you don’t have to feel rigid and feel like every movement is being directed. And I’ll be there to catch those sneaky stolen glances and genuine moments. Rather then pose you, I provide you with prompts, with plenty of room to make it your own, so your own authentic selves and emotions shine through.

Tip #3: PLAY MUSIC! How good is music!? It’s a vibe! I always carry my portable Bluetooth speaker with me and play music during sessions. It can help set the mood and get you in a good headspace so you can relax and focus on each other, rather than me, the weird one, following you around with a camera! Plus, I am a Spotify playlist-making queen! So feel free to send over any music requests before our session together!

Client Testimonial

“Sam made us feel so comfortable and relaxed. She offered advice on outfits and answered my millions of questions. It was our first time behind a professional camera as a couple and we felt as ease with Sam’s sweet personality. We really enjoyed our evening with Sam laughing, dancing and visiting. I highly recommend her and if ever we are in the area again and want pictures we will most definitely contact Sam!” – K.K.
